Abstract:

Simon Borg first taught English as a foreign language in 1988, in Malta, then graduated from the University of Malta in 1990 and started teaching English in a state secondary school, also in Malta. He did my MA at the College of St Mark & St John (UK) in 1991 and taught for a few more years in Malta after that, starting a PhD at the University of Exeter in 1994. He spent two years in New Zealand from 1996, teaching, teacher training and finishing the PhD, and in 1998 he joined the University of Leeds. He left Leeds as a Professor of TESOL in 2014 to become a full-time consultant and remain a Visiting Professorthere. He is also a ‘Professor II’ at University College Bergen. His PhD was about teacher cognition in L2 grammar teaching and the study of teachers’ beliefs and knowledge. He also specializes in teacher education and professional development, teacher research, and research methods. What comes below is an interview with Professor Simon Borg on his academic achievements and issues related to teacher education conducted by the editor of IJLTR. KS stands for Karim Sadeghi and SB stands for Simon Borg.

Abstract:

We propose a new notion of contraction mappings for two class of functions involving measure of noncompactness in Banach space and derive some basic Darbo type fixed and coupled fixed point results. This work includes and extends the results of Falset and Latrach[ Falset, J. G., Latrach, K.: On Darbo-Sadovskii's fixed point theorems type for abstract measures of (weak) noncompactness, Bull. Belg. Math. Soc. Simon Stevin 22 (2015), 797-812. ] The results are also correlated with the classical generalized Banach fixed point theorems. Also we show the applicability of obtained results to the Volterra integral equations in Banach algebras.

Abstract:

In the 16th and 17th centuries the classical Greek notions of (discrete) numberand (continuous) magnitude (preserved in medieval Latin translations of Euclid’sElements) underwent a major transformation that turned them into continuous but measurablemagnitudes. This article studies the changes introduced in the classical notionsof number and magnitude by three influential Renaissance editions of Euclid’s Elements.Besides providing evidence of earlier discussions preparing notions and argumentseventually introduced in Simon Stevin’s Arithmétique of 1585, these editionsdocument the role abacus algebra and Renaissance views on the history of mathematicsplayed in bridging the gulf between discrete numbers and continuous magnitudes.

Abstract:

The questions of why suffering exists, what its meaning is, and how we should deal with it, are among the most serious concerns in the field of practical theology which prompted Simon Weil, the French philosopher, theologian, mystic, and fighter, to put forward a special theory in this regard, according to which, creation is a kind of abandonment and withdrawal of God from nature. God has placed our whole being in the hands of the cruel necessity of matter and the violence of Satan, except for the eternal truth of our souls. Thus, in Weil's view, creation is neither good nor bad; It is "necessary." Therefore, the first step to understanding and coping with the cause of our suffering in this world is to understand the meaninglessness of this cause. This world revolves around necessity, and necessity is a "blind and deaf mechanism" by the will of God, and in the meantime, God, by His will, remains neutral. But on the other hand, this necessity can be loved, and this is the best choice in the face of something for which we have no choice to accept or reject. Simon Weil believed that if a person surrenders to the neutrality of God and the coercive presence of necessity in this world, the beauty of the world will gradually appear to him. She believed that there was an important difference between "suffering" and "affliction." Suffering is primarily concerned with the physical aspect, and affliction, though inseparable from suffering, penetrates deep into the soul. From this point of view, affliction is a kind of uprooting of life and the more or less attenuated equivalent of death and the complete cessation of hope, in which, instead of getting rid of it, you have to destroy yourself.

Abstract:

The goblin spider Orchestina manicata Simon, 1893 (Araneae: Oonopidae) has remained taxonomically unrevised and has not been phylogenetically placed until now. In this study, O. manicata is redescribed based on newly collected specimens from Sri Lanka. The habitus and genital morphology of both males and females are illustrated and described, with photographs provided for the first time. Orchestina manicata is recognised by the embolus which has a triangular bifid tip and a swollen palpal tibia. The abdomen in males and females is rounded. Through a phylogenetic analysis of 51 morphological characters, combined with molecular data from two target genes (28S, 18S), we present the first hypothesis regarding the phylogenetic placement of this species within the genus.

Abstract:

Neil Simon’ s plays, through their comic exterior, target serious social critique at the contemporary media-ridden culture of America. This research is a study of Simon’ s theater from the perspective of Hannah Arendt’ s speculations on human condition, totalitarianism, and violence. The selected plays, Fools, Lost in Yonkers, and Laughter on the 23rd Floor are scrutinized according to the three main concepts in Arendt’ s thought, which are “ action” , “ work” , and “ labor” . Action is a set of goal-oriented human activities carried out in plurality and imbued with the hope for new possibilities. Plural action is the most effective means of resisting totalitarianism that only wishes to downgrade action to work and then labor through violence. However, despite impositions and enforcements of violence, action always remains in the history for future generations to draw inspiration from. In Simon’ s theater, despite its nonpolitical and humorous faç ade, action is inevitably thwarted, but its positive outcomes cannot be plagued. Simon puts on a vivid display the sparkles of pluralism and action regardless of immanent violence and its democratic disguise.

Abstract:

Introduction Philosophical research in the study of political geography in Iran is very limited. Among the existing cases, we encounter a kind of theoretical confusion that results from a lack of sufficient scientific and philosophical accuracy. Therefore, this study seeks to address the critical philosophical geopolitical critique in the writings of Ó,Tuathail and Dalby by pointing out the necessity of conducting philosophical research in the field of geography and enumerating some of the negative consequences of this fundamental neglect. The whole focus of critical geopolitics is on the field of epistemology,As if ontology could exist independently of ontology. As a result, it cannot offer a cognitive and theoretical approach to geography and erroneously pretends that science and objectivity are possible only in a positivist form. Ignoring the importance of ontology has made critical geopolitics unable to offer a liberating approach, contrary to its claims. This is why we encounter widespread confusion in the cognitive debates of Ó,Tuathail and Dalby. The present study is a kind of fundamental-theoretical research that tries to answer the proposed questions by using the method of logical analysis and library resources. The alternative theoretical basis is derived from Bhaskar’, s philosophy of science as critical realism. Conclusion Critical geopolitical ontology is a kind of human-centered, idealistic, and therefore subjectivist ontology that reduces the whole of reality to discourse and thus lacks a layered philosophical approach and cannot interact with the non-discourse and structural layers of reality and, more importantly, with reality. Explain discourse and non-discourse). Because of this flat ontology, critical geopolitics cannot discern the mental and objective layers of geopolitical reality and their dialectical relationship. As a result, theorizing is reduced to a mere critique that preoccupies the subject before recognizing the subject.
